“If you can dream it you can do it”
A familiar phrase, but can visualization actually improve your chances of successfully reaching a goal?
There are loads of research, self help books, psychology blogs, and websites suggesting that positive imagery and visualization can drastically increase your chances of achieving a goal.
I even guide my weight loss babes through a positive visualization exercise during our initial workout consultation where they imagine what life would be like if they reach their ideal health status.
So yea, visualizing yourself at the proverbial finish line can be a good motivator…. if you do it right.
HOWEVER… There is a wrong way to visualize your goals. gasps!
A recent study from The Journal of Experimental Social Psychology (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S002210311100031X) found that positive visualization can actually be detrimental when trying to reach a goal!
Results indicate that one reason positive fantasies predict poor achievement is because they do not generate energy to pursue the desired future.
Basically, our subconscious is kinda dumb.
If we imagine that we are at our destination, our stress response (desire to achieve said goal) subsides.
We become complacent and less inclined to go for that 5am workout so that we can wear a that itsy bits teeny weeny bikini this summer.
The key to making positive visualization work for you to make sure your subconscious knows that your imagery represents a FUTURE GOAL. Not a present situation.
Your goal is to lose 50 pounds so that you can look great on your wedding day.
You paint a vivid picture of your big day- your family and friends gaze in awe as your gracefully walk down the isle in your size 5 backless gown. You dance the night away with your new husband who is taken aback by your exquisite form. You look and feel better than you have in your life. You are glowing.
This is great, BUT you need to follow this ish up by telling your subconscious THIS IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL NOT MY CURRENT SITUATION. In order to get this I need to lose 50 pounds and to make this happen I need to do X,Y, and Z.
By completing this visualization cycle with a plan of action, you can remind your subconscious that your dreams are still just that and that in order to make them real you need to get to work.
Doing this will ignite a drive in you to do what ever it takes to make your visualization real.
So in short; keep dreaming babe, just make sure to follow up those dreams with a good dose of reality so that you will be juiced enough to make that fantasy a reality.
